At Erie Powder / EPC, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our operations and provide better service to our customers. We are writing to inform you about an upcoming, positive change to our standard packaging structure.
Why We Are Making This Change
For 30 years, our standard practice has been to package products in 55 lb / 25 kg cardboard boxes with a plastic liner. While this has served us well, the shipping landscape has changed.
Recently, major courier and delivery providers (such as UPS and FedEx) have strictly enforced a 50 lb gross weight limit for standard shipments, citing worker health and safety. Shipments exceeding this weight now face significant monetary surcharges and unexpected delivery delays. Because our traditional boxes have a gross weight of roughly 57 lb, these penalties have begun to directly impact both our operations and your shipping costs.
To remedy this, we are transitioning to a lighter standard box size to keep gross weights safely under the 50 lb threshold and eliminate these unnecessary fees.
New Packaging Specifications
To keep things simple, we are streamlining our offerings into a single primary box size for stock sales, while introducing a new “split” option for smaller orders.
| Package Type | Previous Weight | New Weight | Notes |
| Standard Box | 55 lb (25 kg) net | 44 lb (20 kg) net | Gross weight sits safely under 50 lb; avoids all courier surcharges. |
| Split Box | 25 lb (11.35 kg) net | 22 lb (10 kg) net | Replaces the old 25 lb box. Packaged in a standard box with a clear “Split Box” label. |
| Low-Density Products | Varies | 33 lb (15 kg) net | Applies to select products with low bulk density (e.g., clears). |
Please Note regarding Split Boxes: Because 22 lb / 10 kg split boxes must be prepared at the time of request, they will require a little extra processing time and will be subject to a splitting surcharge.
Transition Details & Custom Orders
-
Existing Stock: We will not be re-boxing current inventory. Existing stock will continue to be sold at the original 55 lb / 25 kg weight until it is fully depleted.
-
Custom Orders: In the near future, all custom orders will also be transitioned to the new 44 lb / 20 kg standard weight.
While we understand that altering a 30-year standard may require a brief adjustment period for some of our customers, we firmly believe this change will ultimately protect your bottom line and ensure faster, more reliable delivery times.
